Exclusive: Spirit Storyboard Sketches

We're very nearly at the release of Frank Miller's The Spirit and we've got an exclusive look at the artwork of the film for you. Miller storyboarded the entire film before it was shot, and we have two of his sketches, from the new "The Spirit: The Movie Visual Companion" book from Titan Books.

The first picture shows the Spirit (Gabriel Macht) and the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) squaring off on the Central City mudflats in a major sequence early in the movie. The latter shows the Spirit alone on a rooftop.

The Spirit is out on January 1, and The Spirit: The Movie Visual Companion is out now.

McQuarrie To Write Flying Tigers

McQuarrie To Write Flying Tigers

Elton John had Bernard Taupin, Josiah Bartlet had Sam Seaborn and Toby Zeigler, and now to the list of star/writer double-acts we can add Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie, with the Valkyrie co-writer confirmed to pen another likely Cruise star vehicle, New Regency's Flying Tigers.

Never the most prolific writer, McQuarrie has hit something of a purple patch through his partnership with Cruise, with Flying Tigers his fourth ongoing collaboration with the actor. McQuarrie is also underway on scripts for The Monster Of Florence and The Champions (as reported by Empire last month), as well as espionage thriller The Tourist, another likely Cruise starrer.
Flying Tigers will tell the story of a squadron of volunteer pilots helping the Chinese fight the Japanese before America entered the war, promising to send the Top Gun star back into the skies in a reboot of the John Wayne propaganda flick, and no doubt selling bucketloads of Ray-Ban Aviators in the process.

Stephen Chow Won't Direct Green Hornet

He'll still play Kato in the action-com

Stephen Chow Won't Direct Green Hornet

Well, our enthusiasm levels for Seth Rogen’s The Green Hornet just dropped about 27%, with the news that Stephen Chow – the mad genius behind Shaolin Soccer and Kung-Fu Hustle – has dropped out of the director’s chair.

No reason has been given for Chow’s departure – but since he’s still attached to play Kato, the high-kicking sidekick to Rogen’s masked millionaire, Britt Reid, the split can’t have been too acrimonious.

Now, with a Spring start for filming and a 2010 release date looming large, Sony and producer Neal Moritz are now scrambling to find a director who can bring Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s script to life. It’ll be a surprise if they can find anyone whose action/comedy sensibilities match those of Chow’s, but we’ll wait and see.

And just to clarify, we’re still excited to see this – who doesn’t want to see Seth Rogen as a crimefighting superhero? – but Chow’s involvement as director had placed this right near the top of our must-see list. Now, it’s somewhere in the middle.

New Jack Ryan Film Gets A Writer

New Jack Ryan Film Gets A Writer

It’s been a while since we heard any concrete news about Paramount and Sam Raimi’s revamp of the Jack Ryan franchise, but today brought several bags of cement’s worth.
First of all, it’s now just Paramount’s revamp of the Jack Ryan franchise – Raimi has left the project due to a heavy workload, including completing his new movie, Drag Me To Hell and starting work on Spider-Man 4.
Also, a writer has been hired to give Ryan the Batman Begins/Casino Royale reboot treatment.
Hossein Amini, who has written movies as diverse as The Four Feathers, the still-delayed Killshot and Shanghai, has been brought on board by producers Mace Neufeld and Lorenzo di Bonaventura with the brief to write a Ryan origin tale that will have little or nothing to do with Tom Clancy’s novels.
The new movie will obviously involve a new Jack Ryan – the fourth after Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck - and we reckon that Paramount will want to go with a big name. After all, while the Ryan franchise has been lucrative, it’s not a name that carries the instant appeal of a Batman or a Bond.
And while we can understand the reasoning behind a complete revamp of the character, we’re a little sad that Ford won’t be stepping into Ryan’s shoes again, for he would have been perfect for Executive Orders, in which Ryan becomes President of the United States.
However, given that he does so after a terrorist wipes out Congress, the current President and most of the government with an airplane, we can see why Paramount might have balked at turning it into a movie.
So, readers - excited by this? Any thoughts on who could play the new Jack Ryan? Or, indeed, direct the movie in Raimi's absence? Answers below...

Baz Luhrman Set For Great Gatsby

To mirror our own economic downfall

Baz Luhrman Set For Great Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann has acquired the rights for F. Scott Fitzgerald's pre-Depression masterpiece The Great Gatsby, so he can show us exactly what went wrong with the current economy.

Looking at the gilded butterflies of a golden age coming to a close, The Great Gatsby is regarded as one of the great American novels. The hedonism, materialism and amorality that Fitzgerald explored, draw obvious parallels to the current state of play as we sink into recession after a long period of luxuriant prosperity. Lurhmann says: "People will need an explanation of where we are and where we've been, and 'The Great Gatsby' can provide that explanation."

Feeling a need to administer a wake-up call to the public, he notes: "If you wanted to show a mirror to people that says, 'You've been drunk on money,' they're not going to want to see it. But if you reflected that mirror on another time they'd be willing to."

Luhrmann hopes to develop the project at a personally unprecedented speed to capture the significance of this parallel: "I'm going to move faster than I have before. I'd be surprised if it's another seven years." Undeterred by so-far-so-middling box office returns on Australia, he went on to say that the people needed to take a message of hope from the film.

Frank Miller To Direct Buck Rogers

Spaceman in the future story

Frank Miller To Direct Buck Rogers

Frank Miller's still busy promoting The Spirit, but there's no rest for the wicked in the world of comics, so he's lining up his next project, and it looks likely to be Buck Rogers, the swashbuckling spaceman in the 25th century.

Rogers' adventures all saw this 20th century pilot / astronaut accidentally frozen / trapped in suspended animation for 500 years, to awaken in a much-changed Earth of the 25th century. There, he has to fight for truth, justice and the American way again, alongside a hot love interest and usually a teenage sidekick.

Miller and producers Odd Lot Entertainment are currently in final negotiations for the rights, and it is hoped that this will be his next project, given that Sin City 2 is still no further along. While it's very early days yet, Miller's take on the story is expected to be a dark one, and to tackle his familiar themes of corruption and redemption. In other words, don't expect him to bring back the TV incarnation's robot comic relief Twiki.

This news brings two questions to mind: first, we wonder whether Miller is going through all the classic comics of the Golden Age and attempting to film them, with The Spirit and now this. If his next film is Tarzan, we'll know for sure. Second, would it have been too much to ask for a Duck Dodgers in the Twenty-Fourth-and-a-Half Century film? Would it?

Edward Enninful, who styled the campaign, added, ”We’re showing a bit more leg, the shirts are open a little lower…I think you see a slightly new side to both Gwyneth and Tod’s.”

For Derek Lam, Creative Director for Tod’s, “Gwyneth effortlessly embodies the spirit of the International woman with timeless elegance and modern flair - the perfect representation of the Tod’s woman”.

The 39-year-old actress toted around her brown Ferragamo bag as she left boyfriend John Mayer’s apartment. (Yes, she spent the night . . .)

Yesterday evening, the couple went on a double date at La Esquina with talk show host Kelly Ripa and her husband Mark Consuelos. John and Jen snuggled up with each other as they walked back to his apartment from the restaurant.

Anne Hathaway & Adam Shulman: Still Going Strong

Anne Hathaway and her new boyfriend, Adam Shulman, are getting serious!

When the couple arrived together at New York’s JFK Airport on Dec. 11, Adam revealed to Life & Style, “I’m here to see family.”

But first the two stopped at Anne’s Manhattan apartment.

“My friend’s staying with me,” Anne told her doorman, according to an eyewitness.

In addition to hanging out in NYC, the Bride Wars star, 26, and her actor beau, 27, have been spending time in Adam’s hometown of LA, where Anne has a rental house.

“She’s insisted that Adam sleep with her in her big house every night she’s there,” says an insider. “It’s not really because she’s afraid to be alone — she says she just really loves to see his face.”
