Wimpy Kid Puts The Hurt On Sucker Punch

Comedy coincidence ahoy! Despite a marketing blitz and director Zack Snyder out stumping for the film, his latest visual action epic Sucker Punch was squarely beaten by a surprise victor, with the sequel to Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Rodrick Rules, snatching a solid $24.4 million at the US box office this weekend.

While Fox will no doubt be delighted to have a successful, family-attractive franchise on its hands, Warner Bros. is likely less delighted by the performance of Snyder’s latest, which managed a soft $19 million despite starting off strong on Friday. The new films meant Limitless went down to third place, making $15.2, while The Lincoln Lawyer held on in fourth with $11 million. The Johnny Depp-voiced 'toon Rango went down to fifth, earning $9.8 million.

In sixth place was Battle: Los Angeles, which took in $7.6 million, just ahead of Paul, which fell from fifth to seventh and $7.5 million. Red Riding Hood was scared down to eighth from sixth, making $4.3 million, and The Adjustment Bureau slipped to ninth with $4.2 million. Finally, we find misfiring ‘toon Mars Needs Moms squatting at 10th, preparing to leave the top 10 with $2.2 million this weekend and $19.1 million in total so far – that $150 million budget is going to be tough to earn back…
