International Reel Steel Poster Arrives

When the US teaser poster for robot boxing drama Real Steel landed last week, it wasn’t exactly the best example of a professionally produced promo shot ever. Fortunately, us international types get one that’s just a little bit better, and you can take a look below.

While the tagline – “Courage is stronger than steel” – has just the slightest whiff of cheese about it, at least the imagery conjures up a movie, rather than a cheaply produced SyFy Channel pic.

By way of a refresher, the film finds Hugh Jackman as boxer Charlie Kenton, a man struggling to make ends meet in a near-future America. While the sport he made his name in has been replaced by ro-bouts (robot bouts! Geddit?) thanks to the public’s increasing demand for savage fights, he’s tried to adapt by building, training and promoting mechanical fighters. But at his lowest ebb, he suddenly finds himself both forced to reconnect with the son he abandoned (Dakota Goyo) and a robot they pull from a junk pile who seems to have the spark needed to be a great fighter. Provided he doesn’t fall apart…

Real Steel is out on October 7.

New Fright Night Clip Online

The trailer for Fright Night arrived a couple of weeks ago, but now there’s a full clip from the film online, featuring Colin Farrell’s decidedly creepy Jerry Dandridge having a little man-to-man (well, vampire-to-teen) with Anton Yelchin’s Charley Brewster. You can take a look below.

Featuring Farrell in full-on charm offensive – with the emphasis on offensive, since he decides to unload on Charley everything he’s been thinking about with regards to his mother Jane (Toni Collette) and Amy (Imogen Poots), the girl he likes. Suffice to say, it’s not exactly a comfortable conversation for Charley.

Fright Night, of course, follows the basic plot of the 1985 original, as Charley increasingly begins to suspect that his mysterious new neighbour might be something slightly more dangerous than just a lothario with a wandering eye. Soon, he and best pal “Evil” Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) are trying to fight off the fiend, roping in cheesy performance art magician Peter Vincent (David Tennant). Hope they’ve got the holy water on tap…

Take a look at the clip and let us know your thoughts.

The film is out on September 2.

James Wan Getting More Insidious?

James Wan Getting More Insidious?
Not quite... Not yet...

James Wan Getting More Insidious?

James Wan and Leigh Whannell's bonkers supernatural horror Insidious is this year's most profitable film so far, with box office currently at something like seventy times its budget. Inevitable then that talk should turn to Insidious 2, with producer Jason Blum telling Shock "I wouldn't say we're not considering it..."

Without wishing to get too spoilerific, the ending of the first film certainly leaves scope for more. Quite apart from the bizarre business with Patrick Wilson, we don't know what happened to young Ty Simpkins either. As with the best horror, it works to leave matters ambiguous, but should Wan and Whannell wish to continue, there are threads to pick up.

Happily though, there is some quality control at work. "There's no plan, no release date, nothing like that," says Blum. "I think James feels the same as Oren Peli, who was very sceptical about doing a sequel to Paranormal Activity until Michael Peri pitched an idea and it made sense. If Leigh comes up with a story that's inventive and that James feels is worth making - as opposed to 'let's make another movie and make money - we would do it. And if Leigh doesn't, we won't."

Will studio pressure undermine those wise words? And would you like to see more of the spooky old lady and the weird demon puppet-maker with the fondness for Tiny Tim records? Astrally project your thoughts and sequel-pitches into the comments box below, or for more on the first Insidious check out our webchat with Wan and Whannell here.

The Hobbit Films Get Official Titles

The Hobbit Films Get Official Titles

Now that the two movies are shooting, it was about time that Peter Jackson, MGM and New Line got around to naming them. Well, it’s official: the Hobbit films are going to be called The Hobbit: Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire and The Hobbit 2: Electric Bilboloo.

Calm down… The actual titles are as follows: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which will arrive in cinemas on December 14, 2012 followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again on December 13, 2013.

And just in case you’ve forgotten, the cast includes (deep mental breath) Martin Freeman, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, Hugo Weaving, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Richard Armitage, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O'Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner.

Meanwhile, keeping up his commitment to engage with fans, Jackson has started answering submitted questions on his Facebook page. And he’s kicked off by talking about the likelihood that we’ll see the White Council take action in the new films.

For those scrunching their faces in bewilderment at the mention of the name, the Council was made up of various Elves, Wizards and others who met to maintain the peace and deal with problems through the years in Middle-earth, often focusing on the rising threat from Sauron. Elrond (Weaving), Gandalf (McKellen) and Galadriel (Blanchett) all served at one point. The Council was also involved in driving Sauron out of his former stronghold in Dol Guldur, resulting in him ending up in Mordor.

“I'm not going to say just what and when, but I will confirm that both the White Council and Dol Guldur will feature in the movies. And not just in one scene either. Just how to visualise it has been a challenge, but fortunately Alan Lee and John Howe went crazy with ideas, and it should look pretty cool."

Jackson also posts a link to an extremely cool picture of the most famous members of the Council meeting on set and brandishing deadly weapons, so be sure to head on over and take a look.

Hangover 2 Parties Atop US Box Office

Proving that heavily mixed reviews are often no bar to box office success, The Hangover 2 romped home to a big win this weekend, boosted by kicking off on Thursday and the long Memorial Day holiday across the pond. While the weekend gross across the three days was $105.7 million, midnight screenings and those extra couple of days in release means that the Wolfpack’s latest outing now has the highest-grossing opening weekend for a live-action comedy and $137.3 million in the US domestic bank so far. It appears destined to easily match or, more likely, beat the original’s hefty totals.

Kung Fu Panda 2, on the other hand, couldn’t quite live up to its own cinematic parent’s performance, earning a decent, but hardly huge $68 million and placing second. Still, it was ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which slipped to third with $50.3 million, and Bridesmaids, which dropped to fourth and $20.9 million. Thor fell to fifth and took in $12 million.

Outside the top five, Fast Five continued to do decent business, drawing in $8.1 million, while Midnight in Paris made its mark on the top 10 for the first time, jumping up from 13th to seventh with $3.5 million. Rio was eighth, making $2.4 million and Jumping the Broom took ninth with $2.35 million. Finally, at 10th, we find Something Borrowed, which prepared to leave the top 10 with $2.32 million for the weekend and $35.2 million in total to date.

Red Band Dragon Tattoo Teaser Leaks

Red Band Dragon Tattoo Teaser Leaks
Fincher's latest gets a great promo

Red Band Dragon Tattoo Teaser Leaks

Despite it being a holiday weekend both here and across the pond, and the movie news flow diminishing to more of a trickle, a couple of intriguing items did drip out into the world. And the most interesting? An apparent “leak” of the “international” trailer for David Fincher’s take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

We’re shoving those quotes around certain words because, despite the fact that all the info had the teaser being released outside the US, it kicks off with an MPAA R-rating card, something that doesn’t tend to occur in Europe and the rest of the world. And while it really does look like a shaky cam copy taken in a cinema, with cropped picture and occasionally blurry action, the sound is crystal clear. Finally, though this could be because studio tech and legal teams are on holiday, it has somehow managed to stay on YouTube for hours.

And to be honest, we could see Sony leaving this thing up, since it’s generating some seriously positive buzz. Powered by a storming cover of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song by Karen O, it’s a dazzling mix of dark scenes and tough moments. And that tagline – “The feel-bad movie of Christmas?” A cherry on the disturbing cake.

The official “green band” version is scheduled to hit the Interwebs on Tuesday, and we'll definitely get that one up for you. If it’s half as compelling as this, Fincher’s latest will cement its growing reputation as one of the most anticipated films of the year. But if you are tempted to watch it, please be aware that it's NSFW thanks to brief nudity and lashings of claret.

With the likes of Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright, Max von Sydow, Christopher Plummer and Joely Richardson in the cast, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will leave its mark on these shores on December 26.

Alice Braga Joins Elysium

Neil Blomkamp is taking an intriguing attitude to casting his District 9 follow-up, Elysium and with each new name brought aboard, we’re increasingly interested to see the thing. Well, we’ll have to wait, since he doesn’t kick off shooting until July, but now Alicia Braga is on for an undisclosed role.

Yes, Blomkamp and his team have been working hard to make sure that few details about the movie leak before they’re ready to start teasing us, but we do know it takes place in the distant future and will feature plenty of the socio-allegorical themes that were a big part of District 9. Just no Prawns this time. Unless they get a background cameo.

Matt Damon’s on for the lead alongside Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner and Brazilian actor Wagner Moura. And if you weren’t already excited by the prospect of another sci-fi film from Blomkamp, he’s also got legendary designer Syd Mead working on the sets and other concepts.

As mentioned, the film doesn’t gear up production until July, starting in Vancouver before moving to Mexico City. And we’ll have to wait until March 2013 at the earliest to see it hit cinemas. Never a TARDIS around when you need one…

Matthew Lewis On Deathly Hallows 2

It's the penultimate Harry Potter video and interview today* as Matthew Lewis, aka Neville Longbottom, talks us through what we can expect in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2. A good bit smarter and more eloquent than Neville in real life, Lewis plays a big role in the last film, which he talks about a little in the video below and more in our text interview this way.

If you're still playing catch-up, we've already had Rupert Grint's take on the finale, and Tom Felton, and James and Oliver Phelps. You might also like a look at our "Sum up the entire Harry Potter experience in one word" video over here, or just cut out the middle man and buy the magazine this way.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is out on July 15, and the new Empire with our Ultimate Movie Celebration is (chorus it with me!) out now in all good newsagents or online here.

*At least until release, when we will have some more goodies for you.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark Trailer

Hold us, we're frightened!

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark Trailer

The new trailer for the Guillermo del Toro-presented, Troy Nixey-directed Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark has not failed in its principal aim: it's made us terrified of the dark and all dark-adjacent spaces. Starring Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes, the film looks set to be a haunted house story that throws absolutely every horror trick out there at the audience, along with lots of Del Toro's own patented brand of creepy-beautiful.

The story is a familiar one. A young girl (Bailee Madison, of Bridge To Terabithia) goes to live with her father (Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Holmes) in a big old house. Naturally there's something (or things) there that take an unhealthy interest in the newcomer. Uh, and indeed, oh.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark is out in the UK on August 12. Buy yourself a nightlight before then.

Peter Jackson confirms Legolas' return

Orlando Bloom Joins The Hobbit

We thought we already knew this - it was strongly rumoured as long as six months ago - but Peter Jackson has just confirmed via his Facepage that Orlando Bloom is returning to Middle Earth for The Hobbit.

The exact circumstances of his appearance aren't clear, since Legolas doesn't feature in the book at all. But then neither do Galadriel or Frodo, and that hasn't stopped Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood getting the call to pack for New Zealand. Bilbo and co do pass through Legolas' birthplace Mirkwood though, and encounter Legolas' father, the Elvenking Thranduil (who's being played in the film by Lee Pace), so maybe there's something there. Elves are long-lived after all...

"Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas," says Jackson. "I'm excited to announce today that we'll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn’t! I guess that's why he makes such a wonderful elf."

Shooting on The Hobbit is currently underway. You may have heard about it.

JJ Abrams & Steven Spielberg On Super 8

JJ Abrams & Steven Spielberg On Super 8
World exclusive: of kids & monsters

JJ Abrams & Steven Spielberg On Super 8

We're not allowed to tell you what we think of Super 8 yet, so we can't, for example, tell you that it is best summed up by a word that rhymes with "schwawesome". But we can bring you this world exclusive interview with the film's producer, Steven Spielberg, and director JJ Abrams.

Super 8 is a 1970s-set thrilller wherein a group of teenage filmmakers witness a devastating train crash - only to learn that there may be even more destructive forces threatening their town. It's been shrouded in secrecy to date, but just a few hints of what's in store are now beginning to emerge.

The world's greatest director/producer (and former Empire editor) and once-and-future Star Trek director discuss the origins of the project in this clip, as well as their own memories of childhood filmmaking (which informs both the plot and the title), the experience of watching movies underage and their work on creating the ultimate monster.

Our Ian Freer did the interview at a top-secret location yesterday, so this is hot-off-the-presses stuff. Super 8 is out on August 5, and again, we are not yet allowed to use any words like "stunning" or "beautifully crafted" to describe it. There's more on Super 8 in the new issue of Empire, out today.
