Could The Rock Be Goliath?

He could Bring It, Biblically...

Could The Rock Be Goliath?

Back in January, The Exorcism of Emily Rose writer/director Scott Derrickson stepped aboard the planned new cinematic version of the David and Goliath story, titled simply Goliath. And while it remains floating in development, it would appear that the movie is now creeping closer to reality with producers now talking to Dwayne Johnson about playing the hulking villain of the piece.

It’s early days yet but Twitch reports that Temple Hill team Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen have simply reached out to the head of Team Bring It to consider the role. He certainly fits the bill: you wouldn’t need much CGI to make audiences believe that Johnson was a gigantic, fearsome warrior, who is challenged by a young farm hand to a confrontation. A battle that (spoiler alert!) doesn’t go so well for the bigger bloke.

Given that Godfrey and Bowen have also been heavily involved in the Twilight franchise, no one should be surprised that they also have a particular name at the top of their wish list for David, with word that Taylor Lautner’s agent should expect a phone call with an offer.

Biblical tales are definitely hot at the moment, with Darren Aronofsky also putting the pieces together for his take on Noah’s ship building quest. Goliath may have to wait a little while, though, since Derrickson, who last made The Day the Earth Stood Still, is already busy preparing to start making found footage thriller Sinister with Ethan Hawke in the lead and Johnson is shooting up everything in sight on the set of G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation

Linklater On For College Republicans

Linklater On For College Republicans

Karl Rove is easily one of the most polarising figures ever to (dis)grace American politics. The man who worked for Richard Nixon and George HW Bush and helped get George W Bush elected president is a lightning rod for both celebration and scorn. And now his early years as a political manipulator are going to be explored by Richard Linklater in College Republicans, with There Will Blood’s Paul Dano playing the younger Rove.

Wes Jones’s script, which landed on the 2010 Black List, follows Rove and fellow political thinker Lee Atwater (who would go on to advise Presidents Reagan and Bush as well as being chairman of the Republican National Committee) when they first meet after Rove drops out of the University of Utah to take a position with the College Republican National Committee. Atwater managed his campaign when Rove opted to run for national chairman of the Committee. There, the pair really started to develop their talents for political dirty tricks.

Producer Maya Browne tells The Wrap that Linklater, who last directed Me and Orson Welles and has dark comedy Bernie set for release, will kick off filming in his usual stomping ground of Austin, Texas this coming November.

Currently at work once more with his Little Miss Sunshine directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris on He Loves Me, Dano scored the role of Rove after Shia LaBeouf initially showed some interest. And given what Rove looked like at the time, he’s a solid facial fit…

Crowe Waves Off Say Anything Sequel Talk

When Cameron Crowe casually let slip at the start of this month that he’d had thoughts about a sequel to his 1989 rom-com classic Say Anything… it naturally set off a firestorm of speculation online. While we reported on Crowe’s comments, we were sceptical that the news was anything but the writer/director simply riffing on the idea and now he tells IFC that that’s exactly what it was.

"I was very surprised that got picked up and repeated so many times," he says, stating for the record that any idea of a sequel to the John Cusack/Ione Skye-starring movie is "definitely a pipe dream."

"It's a personal thing for me, that movie," Crowe explains. "It's probably my favourite thing I've ever done. And the last thing I would ever dream of doing is touching something that I feel so proud about in any way. I just love the characters and I was sort of musing out loud with this really cool person that had asked the question."

But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t thought about ideas on a casual basis. "I do from time to time, just talking with friends," Crowe admits. “But there's no script, nobody's out there trying to pitch a Say Anything... sequel." Still, could we expect something else, such as a spin-off? "If anything, it would be a side character or some story where there was some kind of linkage. I love Mike Cameron (Jason Gould), I love the poor drunk that they drive home on the night of the grad party. As a writer, there's just more there that I always thought, 'Well someday.' Maybe it's just a short story. Maybe it's a miniature kind of thing that I write some day." So there you have it – no one should be holding any kind of breath.

But if you are craving more Anything, you'll be happy to hear that Crowe himself has been posting deleted script fragments on his site...

Gemma Ward Joins Great Gatsby

As he prepares to start shooting The Great Gatsby early next month, Baz Luhrmann has been filling in some of the smaller parts of his adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, adding Callan McAuliffe and Gemma Ward to the cast.

Gatsby already features Leonardo DiCaprio, Isla Fisher, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton and Jason Clarke in the central roles of the rich playboy Jay Gatsby and the ill-fated couples/friends who orbit his charismatic centre.

Luhrmann, who is shooting the movie down under, is boosting the Oz contingent in the cast even further despite the presence of Fisher, Edgerton and Clarke. McAuliffe, last seen as Alex Pettyfer’s geeky, alien-obsessed friend Sam in I Am Number Four, is on to play the younger version of DiCaprio’s leading man.

Ward, a fellow Aussie and former model, menaced the leads The Strangers and was one of the mermaids in this year’s On Stranger Tides. While Entertainment Weekly brings word of her casting, there’s no news as to exactly which role she’ll play just yet, though there has been speculation that it'll be Catherine, the sister to Fisher's Myrtle Wilson.

With a script by Luhrmann and regular co-writer Craig Pearce, The Great Gatsby will grace our screens in 3D next year.

The Blues Brothers Coming To TV?

Dan Aykroyd pitching a pilot to networks

The Blues Brothers Coming To TV?

While he’s still looking to get the Ghostbusters back on the big screen, it seems Dan Aykroyd also wants to continue one of his other famous co-creations – The Blues Brothers – in some fashion, though this time on the goggle box.

Variety reports that Aykroyd, along with John Belushi’s ex-wife Judy, have owned the TV rights to the characters of Jake and Elwood Blues for years, and that they’re now shopping the prospect of a Blues Brothers series around the US networks. The package so far includes a pilot script written by Aykroyd, former Saturday Night Live scribe Anne Beatts, Wayne Catania and Kieron Lafferty.

The plot will see the musically inclined pair freshly out of jail, with Elwood on the hunt for his real father. While the intention is to find new actors to play the brothers, Aykroyd will be involved as the voice of their parole officer.

After debuting on SNL in 1978, the Blues Brothers sketches became one of the earliest breakouts from the show. Elwood (Aykroyd) and Jake (John Belushi) formed a touring band and starred in 1980’s classic John Landis comedy built around them. Despite the fact that Belushi died in 1982, Aykroyd has never quite let the idea of the duo die with him. On the positive side, he spearheaded the House of Blues music venues and toured the band with Jim Belushi. On the negative side, his continuing obsession also spawned dodgy film sequel Blues Brothers 2000 in 1998 (although the silver lining there is the song How Blue Can You Get).

But because nothing can be left alone these days, it appears that if one of the US channels picks up the idea, the boys will be back. “I think these are great American characters," Judy Belushi tells Variety. "We want to keep them alive. We chose to introduce them as new characters but do it in an way that they have some history, have some life behind them." Pray the latest incarnation of their “mission from God” turns out better than the second movie…

Alan Dale On For Dragon Tattoo

David Fincher adds a last minute role
Source: Variety

Alan Dale On For Dragon Tattoo

Despite being all but wrapped on principal photography for the film, David Fincher has clearly decided that what his version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo needs is a little injection of Hey It’s That Guy credibility, hiring one of the stalwarts of the description, Alan Dale, for a small role.

Dale, who was once best known as Jim from Aussie soap Neighbours but has since gone on to crop up in almost every American TV series made in the last few years, playing Caleb Nicol on The OC and Charles Widmore on Lost, among many other roles.

For Fincher, he’s appearing as a career police detective on the verge of retirement. There’s no word on how long he shot for, but we doubt it can be more than a few days at most.

He’s joining a cast that includes Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard, Christopher Plummer and Joely Richardson among many others.

Fincher’s take on Stieg Larsson’s novel, adapted this time by Steven Zaillian, will hit our screens on December 26. Dale, meanwhile, will next be seen on fantasy TV drama Once Upon a Time.

David Koepp Writing The Thin Man

David Koepp Writing The Thin Man

He may not be able to control what happens with The Lone Ranger’s budget worries, but Johnny Depp is much more firmly in charge of his plan to get a new take on The Thin Man into cinemas, hiring David Koepp to start writing a script for the film that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall will bring to life.

Back in March, Depp engaged Permanent Midnight’s Jerry Stahl to take a crack at adapting Dashiel Hammett’s fifth and final novel, which appeared in 1934 and was almost immediately filmed with William Powell in the lead. But according to Deadline, Stahl never actually cranked anything out, so now the even more experienced Koepp is aboard instead.

Koepp will reportedly go back to the source novel, which finds retired detective Nick Charles (the role Depp will play) marrying wealthy socialite Nora and generally boozing it up with a little light crime solving sprinkled in to keep things interesting.

The writer’s job will apparently be to combine elements from the first two Thin Man films (the eponymous original and 1936’s After the Thin Man), maintaining the period setting but giving it a little Sherlock Holmes-style panache. But more surprisingly, he’ll need to leave room for Marshall to add in a couple of musical numbers, which seems like an odd proposition.

His hiring is not really a surprise, since Koepp has a history with Depp, having directed him in Secret Window back in 2004. And he’s also a man in great demand, thanks to scripting some of the biggest films of the last couple of decades, including Jurassic Park and the first Spider-Man. Most recently, he signed on to re-write the still-untitled Jack Ryan Reboot for Paramount and to do some work on Men in Black 3. Plus he has his latest co-writing/directing job, the Joseph Gordon-Levitt pic Premium Rush, waiting for release next February.

HP has announced its intention to cease production of devices based on the operating system WebOS. In particular, it relates to the tablet TouchPad, smart phones and Palm Pre. In a press release the company stated that its experts will continue to explore options for optimizing software WebOS with a view to possible further promotion.
HP plans to report on devices WebOS arrived at the meeting of the board of directors, devoted to preliminary results work in the fourth quarter of 2011 fiscal year, as well as plans for the future.
The agenda of the board meeting, HP was the question of acquisition of the British software company Autonomy. In a press release HP confirmed that negotiations are under way now about the possibility of this transaction. According to the BBC, the purchase will cost the U.S. company Autonomy of 6.2 billion ($ 10.3 billion). Considerable sum, although the arithmetic here is simple. The acquisition last year of Palm cost HP $ 1.3 billion In view of the fact that the portfolio consists of about 12 Palm thousands of patents, the sale of this package may, if not entirely, to a large extent cover the cost of HP’s acquisition of Autonomy. However, the final decision on this matter yet.

These will give you a nice close-up view of Rooney Mara's Lisbeth Salander, and Daniel Craig's Mikael Blomkvist, hard at work. They also reveal that it sometimes snows in Scandanavia, which will come in handy for all those of you who slept through geography class in school.

The Deep Blue Sea To Close The LFF

The Deep Blue Sea To Close The LFF
Rachel Weisz meets Terence Davies

The Deep Blue Sea To Close The LFF

The closing night film of this year's 55th BFI London Film Festival has been announced, and it's The Deep Blue Sea. Not to be confused with that film about sharks, this is a drama based on Terence Rattigan's 1952 play and adapted by Terence Davies, with Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston and Simon Russell Beale in the lead roles.

The movie, previewed in last month's magazine, sees Weisz cast as a 50s housewife married to Russell Beale. She starts an affair with ex-RAF-type Hiddleston, leading her into perillous new territory.

Hiddleston told Empire, "It's the simplest story about the complexity of being in love, the triumph of feeling over propriety. Even back in the '50s people were breaking through their corsets and allowing their hearts to be free."

The movie marks a neat one-two for Weisz, who also has a role in the Festival's opening film, 360. The Deep Blue Sea is out on November 25, but will close the BFI London Film Festival on October 27. The Festival runs from October 12-27, and the full line-up will be announced next week.
