Star Blazers: The Movie?

The parade of cult kids’ shows being marched into the maw of the Movie Machine continues apace, with the latest title targeted for conversion being animated series Star Blazers, for which Skydance Production is in the middle of nabbing the rights and handing over to Chris McQuarrie for scripting duties.

/Grandpa mode: on/ Those old enough to remember might recall that Star Blazers appeared back in the 1970s on that glowing box that The Kids Today largely ignore, and itself was an adaptation of the Japanese series Space Battleship Yamato series, with the usual editing and dubbing. /Grandpa mode: off/

Considered to be one of the first truly popular crossovers from anime, the series took place on a badly polluted Earth with the human race staring extinction in the face within a year. A mysterious alien race offers them the plans to build an engine that can make their ships travel faster than ever before and a challenge that if they can reach the planet Iscandar, fighting all opposition in their way, they’ll be given the secret to saving the planet. Assuming they can get back in time, that is…

If the film makes it through the development asteroid field, it won’t be the first movie with links to Space Battleship Yamato to come down the pipe: a Japanese studio has just released a version to theatres there, which may make it over here one day.

Skydance is the brainchild of producer (and slightly wealthy bloke) David Ellison, who has been slowly easing into the world of film. His original aim was to be an actor/producer, though his first effort, Flyboys, crashed on arrival at the box office. He’s had some success since then as a pure producer though – especially with True Grit, which he co-funded alongside Paramount and is now seeing nab awards aplenty and bring a healthy return on its investment.

While he has other movies in development, including horror and comedies, Ellison’s a little bit obsessed with all things winged and mechanical – he owns several small planes at the Santa Monica airport in LA and he’s also spearheading a sequel to Top Gun with Paramount that McQuarrie is also attached to write.

Unknown Recognised At US Box Office

Thanks to the President’s Day holiday, this weekend spanned four days. But the winner remained the same, with Liam Neeson and Unknown charging to the front of the pack of the estimated box office with $25.6 million for the weekend. And while sci-fi teen thriller I Am Number Four scraped ahead of ‘toon Gnomeo and Juliet on Sunday, the garden ornaments crept back by Monday to snatch second place. Gnomeo took $24.8 million, whereas I Am Number Four had to be content with $22.6 million.

In fourth place, we find Adam Sandler’s latest comedy Just Go With It sliding down three with $21.7 million, though that was still more than enough to keep it ahead of Martin Lawrence’s third outing in the “hilarious” fat suit, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. That made $19 million and launched in fifth.

Sitting in sixth place, pop moppet Justin Bieber’s film Never Say Never continued to attract its core audience, though it was down from second with $16.5 million. Seventh was The King’s Speech, which took $7.9 million and is now over $100 million across the pond, with a royal total to date of $104.6 million. The Roommate was eighth with $4.5 million.

Kevin Macdonald’s The Eagle had its shiny metal wings clipped this weekend, slipping from fourth to ninth place and $4.3 million, while the 10th slot was taken by sex-friends comedy No Strings Attached, which made $3.2 million.

Another look at Spielberg's new show

New Falling Skies Promos

With the new alien invasion TV series Falling Skies set to hit US telly boxes this June (and hopefully our own not long after that), executive producer Steven Spielberg and the rest of the creative team are naturally eager to make sure people remember that it’s on the way. So they’ve launched a series of new TV ads to big up the show.

Falling Skies, which features Saving Private Ryan writer Robert Rodat on script duties and Carl Franklin calling the shots, finds Noah Wyle as former college professor Tom Mason, who has to help fellow survivors of the extraterrestrial barrage stay alive.

Earth, you see, has been brutally attacked by the nasty space types, who took out our military installations, then went after the world’s capitals in a way that would make Roland Emmerich beam with pride, assuming he wasn’t blasted into a million little pieces during the first wave.

Now, with the aliens hunting the stragglers, mankind has to start forming some sort of resistance – or at least ensuring that someone is around to keep the species going.

With that creative pedigree, it’ll hopefully be something good. Take a look at the previews below.

New Limitless UK Posters

Just say no to drugs, kids. Sure, they may promise giggliness and the munchies or, as it may be, sudden success in every aspect of your life - but it's still not a good idea. At least, that looks to be the case in Limitless, Neil Burger's new film that sees Bradley Cooper's failed writer downing a mysterious drug called "Clear Pill" and suddenly finding every synapse in his brain firing on all cylinders.

That might be nice, what with finally finishing his novel and finding considerable success with the opposite sex (represented by Abbie Cornish and Anna Friel) and businessman Carl Van Loon (Robert De Niro) recruiting him, but then there's the possible side-effects and the fact that someone seems to be after his stash. Yikes.

These particular images look quite heavily airbrushed to us, but hey! Cooper's chemically enhanced in the film so maybe all that improvement is cleverly thematic somehow. Limitless is out in the UK on March 23.

Jason Isaacs On For REM

Jason Isaacs On For REM

Jason Isaacs has cropped up on more than one TV series before, including a starring stint opposite Jason Clark on US drama Brotherhood a couple of years ago. Now he’s looking to crack the networks across the pond, signing on to star in the pilot REM for NBC.

Despite the title, he won’t be playing one of the band – he’s actually taking on the role of a detective whose life is sent spinning off into two parallel realities after an accident. As he comes to terms with his strange new situation, he struggles to hang on to his job and family.

As of right now, the series is just one pilot that will be vying against many, but it does have a fairly solid pedigree, with Kyle Killen (who wrote the Black List script that became The Beaver) as its creator and former 24 showrunner Howard Gordon on board to shepherd it should REM make it to the air.

And Isaacs is no doubt crossing his fingers that it has better luck than both the last pilot he was featured in – legal drama Pleading Guilty – and Lone Star, the Texas con man drama that Killen created for the Fox network last autumn that arrived to bad ratings and a quick cancellation. Which was a shame, as it showed a lot of promise…

Leighton Meester Introduces The Roommate

Exclusive trailer of college horror

Leighton Meester Introduces The Roommate

Today's new trailer for The Roommate is brought to us exclusively by Leighton Meester. Okay, not literally - she's too busy with acting and stuff to do deliveries - but she did take time out to introduce her new psychological horror just for you.

Meester - best known as Gossip Girl's Blair - plays Rebecca, a college student who finds herself sharing a dorm with the seemingly super-nice doppelganger Sara (Minka Kelly). But before you can say, "Is Sara really a nutter in disguise?", she reveals herself to be, well, a nutter in disguise. Cue some Psycho-lite shower shenanigans, stalky behaviour and a series of unfortunate events, none of which involve leaving the loo seat up.

If we've seen this before in Single White Female, the two newcomers should provide enough chemistry to keep the teen contingent happy. The Roommate is directed by Danish newcomer Christian E. Christiansen and stars Cam Giganet as the suspicious boyfriend. It's out in this part of the world on April 15.

I Saw The Devil Red Band Trailer

Oldboy gets served

I Saw The Devil Red Band Trailer

There's nothing like a splash of family-friendly fun, and this new red band trailer for I Saw The Devil is nothing like a splash of family-friendly fun. What it is, though, is a deliriously violent, stylish stab of Korean hack'n'slash mayhem and one of the most brilliantly visceral trailers we've clapped eyes on in some time.

The trailer offers a beautifully chopped-up glimpse at a Korean revenge thriller in the same mould as Park Chan-wook's Vengeance trilogy. Sure enough, there's Oldboy himself, Choi Min-sik, a serial killer who finds out the hard way that he's picked the wrong victim when he carjacks the daughter of a retired police chief.

Turns out she's also the girlfriend of elite agent Lee Byung-hyun, a man with a thirst for vengeance and a very particular set of skills. These, by the looks of things, include torture, kidnap and torture. Hey, he likes torture.

Directed by The Good, The Bad, The Weird's Kim Ji-woon, it promises to be one of the year's most brutal thrillers, exploring with gut-punch intensity two fast unravelling psyches and a man trying to reconcile his rage with his morality. Judging by this trailer, rage wins big. Find out when I Saw The Devil steams into cinemas on April 29.

New Thor Trailer Arrives

The teaser landed at the end of last year, but now here comes the full theatrical trailer for Thor, which promises to bring down the wrath of Asgard upon us mere mortals. You can watch the footage below.

This time around, the promo is front-loaded with the Earthbound sections of the plot, and in particular the interplay between Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster and Chris Hemsworth’s muscled hero. It also offers a clearer idea of the comic side to the film, with Empire favourite Kat Dennings bringing the chuckles as she tases Thor shortly after he arrives. Oh, and it seems he approves of coffee.

But then we’re back with the bigger theme of Thor’s brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) deciding that he wants to destroy humanity and the banished son of Odin having to step up to defend us all from the likes of the Destroyer.

While we’re a little concerned that the third act will descend into a Mummy-style orgy of CG creatures, we’re still looking forward to the film as a whole. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know your thoughts.

With Kenneth Branagh directing and Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, Ray Stevenson, Idris Elba, Rene Russo and Clark Gregg also in the cast, Thor is out on April 27.

Leterrier Conjures Now You See Me

Leterrier Conjures Now You See Me
Heist thriller will be magic

Leterrier Conjures Now You See Me

Last we heard, director Louis Leterrier was musing on a strange disaster movie about the Earth losing its gravitational pull. That's apparently still on the cards, but before that, Leterrier will direct Now You See Me, a stratospherically high-concept heist thriller with a script by Boaz Yakin and Edward Ricourt.

The film involves an FBI squad on the trail of, seriously, a team of the world's greatest illusionists who have taken to pulling off bank robberies during their performances. So it's Point Break meets Ocean's Eleven meets The Prestige meets Davids Copperfield and Blane. Or Penn & Teller. Or Gerry Sadowitz. Or something. But if you can suspend your disbelief for the set-up, it's sounding like it could be a lot of fun.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (writers of Fringe, Star Trek and Cowboys and Aliens) are producing under their own banner. "It's amazing," says Leterrier. "Only great people are involved."

No word of a start-date yet, or of the current state of play with Leterrier's mooted movie version of Y: The Last Man.

Binoche & Amalric Head For Cosmopolis

Joining Pattinson and Giamatti

Binoche & Amalric Head For Cosmopolis

David Cronenberg's long-gestating Don DeLillo adaptation is finally coming together properly now, with the news from production company Clapfilmes that Juliette Binoche and Mathieu Amalric have signed on for Cosmopolis, joining the already-cast Robert Pattinson and Paul Giamatti.

Cronenberg's version of DeLillo's modern-day Ulysses will see Pattinson as the protagonist Eric Packer, a just-married billionaire in the process of cheating on his wife and losing in his fortune, in the course of 24 hours in which he's trying to get across a choked New York for a haircut. Giamatti is one the weirdos that's stalking him.

There are no details yet on the roles earmarked for Binoche and Amalric, although we might possibly predict that Amalric will be the other stalker: the credible one, as opposed Giamatti's "pastry assassin." But then again they could be the other way round.

Binoche meanwhile, would be great for the role of Packer's wife, (frequently encountered in increasingly odd circumstances) if not for the fact that Pattinson would be playing her husband. So we're guessing that she'll be one of the many women that cross Packer's path during his fateful day.

Previously on Cosmopolis, Pattinson's role was earmarked for Colin Farrell, before he departed for pastures other. At that time Marion Cotillard was also aboard, but she too now seems to have dropped from the official call sheet, although there's no confirmation from Clap of the various reports that Keira Knightly might be stepping into her vacant shoes.

Questions aside though, we're looking forward to Cosmopolis, and the idea of Cronenberg working with Pattinson is, to say the least, intriguing.

Shooting starts in Toronto in May.

Shane Black Will Direct Iron Man 3

Shane Black Will Direct Iron Man 3
Lethal Weapon legend finally on board

Shane Black Will Direct Iron Man 3

He was in talks last week - and, according to Deadline, he's still in talks - but it looks increasingly likely that Shane Black, the magnificent bastard who wrote Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout and who wrote and directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, will direct Iron Man 3.

That means he's set for a reunion with his Kiss Kiss star, Robert Downey Jr., and given the astonishing dialogue and fireworks that resulted last time around, we have no problem with that whatsoever. We may even be wetter than Drew Barrymore in a grunge bar, but we couldn't possibly comment.

Black has tried to get a number of projects off the ground since his 2005 directorial debut, including Doc Savage and Cold Warrior, while he was also briefly attached to write Lethal Weapon 5. So far, though, he hasn't quite got back behind the camera, so it's something of a surprise to see him attached to a project of this magnitude, but we've no doubt that he'll be able to handle it.

Strangely, Deadline reports that Black - for our money the best dialoguesmith in Hollywood - may not write the script for Iron Man 3, with Marvel presumably worried that he might make Tony Stark eff and cee and cuss like a trooper. But we're sure that, when all's said and done, he'll work his magic on the script at some point.

Phillip Noyce Finds Hunter Killer

Phillip Noyce Finds Hunter Killer

Late last year, we reported on Salt director Phillip Noyce starting negotiations to handle emotionally charged time travel tale Timeless for Relativity Media. Now it looks like that one might have to wait a bit longer, as though Relativity still wants Noyce to work with them, the company has instead tempted him to make Hunter Killer.

The action thriller has been developing for a couple of years now – Taken’s Pierre Morel was the last name said to be in talks for it back in 2008 – and it’s based on the book Firing Point by writer Don Keith and retired submariner George Wallace, which for some reason has still not hit shelves.

Anyhow, Hunter Killer finds an American submarine captain on his first command voyage that must team up with the Navy SEALS to rescue the Russian president who has been kidnapped by a rogue general (the Hollywood Reporter’s story calls him a “rouge” general, but we’re pretty sure he’s gone AWOL, not dipped into the make-up cabinet).

Jamie Moss, who wrote Street Kings and contributed to X-Men: First Class, has penned the script along with John Kolvenbach and Arne Schmidt. And while THR brings confirmation, credit for breaking the story goes to Moviehole.

Noyce aims to start shooting the film later this year, once a cast has been rounded up and shoved through the hatch.
